Reflection #8: Start Before You’re Ready (Wednesday, March 28)

God doesn't call the qualified, he qualifies the called. You can wait forever before you’re ready to reach out to others. Be a light today!

Mark 6:7–13 (NIV) — 7 Calling the Twelve to him, he began to send them out two by two and gave them authority over impure spirits. 8 These were his instructions: “Take nothing for the journey except a staff—no bread, no bag, no money in your belts. 9 Wear sandals but not an extra shirt. 10 Whenever you enter a house, stay there until you leave that town. 11 And if any place will not welcome you or listen to you, leave that place and shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against them.” 12 They went out and preached that people should repent. 13 They drove out many demons and anointed many sick people with oil and healed them.

Mark 4:21–25 (NIV) — 21 He said to them, “Do you bring in a lamp to put it under a bowl or a bed? Instead, don’t you put it on its stand? 22 For whatever is hidden is meant to be disclosed, and whatever is concealed is meant to be brought out into the open. 23 If anyone has ears to hear, let them hear.” 24 “Consider carefully what you hear,” he continued. “With the measure you use, it will be measured to you—and even more. 25 Whoever has will be given more; whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them.”

1. Read Mark 6:7-13.  Do you think the disciples were “ready” to be sent out at this point?  What light do the following verses shed on their readiness:  Mark 6:35-37, 47-52; 7:17-18; 8:14-21, 32?

2. It is important that we be in the process of increasing and improving our motivation, becoming more like Christ in our lifestyle, and being trained to minister and reach out to others.  However, unless there are glaring inconsistencies in our lives or profound doctrinal misunderstandings, it is vital that we go ahead and begin reaching out to others right now, before we feel ready!  Do you think there is any possibility a person could feel ready to begin reaching out to others before he has ever had any experience reaching out to others?

3. Read Mark 4:21-25.  Jesus is “lighting a lamp” in the hearts of his disciples.  Does he intend for that light to be hidden or revealed?  How would this happen?  In v. 24 he mentions the subject of hearing.  According to this verse, what is the key to hearing and receiving more of the word (that is, understanding more of it)?  Agree or disagree:  being involved in trying to influence others toward Christ will lead to God helping you understand better how to influence others toward Christ.

4. What are some things that are clear to you right now about reaching out to others and influencing them toward Christ?  Are you doing this?

5. PRACTICAL APPLICATION:  Find a way (plan, schedule, be alert, or whatever) to do something today or tomorrow to practice what you stated in #4.

Reflection #9: Our Commission, Part One (Thursday, March 29)

Jesus left us the privilege of telling this great story of grace to all the world.   All of us are called to participate in this great commission. Mark 16:15 (NIV) — 15 He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. Luke 24:45–47 (NIV) — 45 Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures. 46 He told them, “This is what is written: The Messiah will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, 47 and repentance for the forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.” Romans 1:16 (NIV) — 16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile. 1 Corinthians 15:1–2 (NIV) — 1 Now, brothers and sisters, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you received and on which you have taken your stand. 2 By this gospel you are saved, if you hold firmly to the word I preac...

Reflection #6: Who Cares? Part Two (Monday, March 26)

Our culture encourages us to look out for ourselves and it’s an easy trend to follow.   Today we want to consider if our personal interests are keeping us from investing in the lives of others. Philippians 2:1–4, 19-21 (NIV) — 1 Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, 2 then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. 3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, 4 not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. 19 I hope in the Lord Jesus to send Timothy to you soon, that I also may be cheered when I receive news about you. 20 I have no one else like him, who will show genuine concern for your welfare. 21 For everyone looks out for their own interests, not those of Jesus Christ. 1.   Ma...

Reflection #1: Getting Started (Monday, March 19)

Evangelism can be a scary!   How do I do it? Do I know enough? Do people really want to hear?   There are so many reasons to let fear and anxiety keep us from doing anything.   Today we want to be reminded that we can’t allow all these questions to keep us from doing what we can do and what we do know.   Read today’s scriptures and then consider the questions provided . Luke 16:10 (NIV) — “Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much." Mark 4:24 (NIV) — “Consider carefully what you hear,” he continued. “With the measure you use, it will be measured to you—and even more." 1.   What are some principles that are clear to you right now about the evangelistic mission that has been entrusted to us? 2.   What are some specific actions you already know to do as far as being involved in this mission? 3.   Read Luke 16:10 and Mark 4:24.
